vrf forwarding

Assigns a virtual routing and forwarding (VRF) routing instance to an interface.
Syntax
vrf forwarding { vrf-name | overlay-vrf }
no vrf forwarding vrf-name
Command Default

A VRF routing instance is not assigned to an interface.

Parameters
vrf-name
Specifies the name of the VRF to which the interface is being assigned.
overlay-vrf
Specifies the routing configuration for the VRF.

Usage Guidelines

When the VRF is configured on a tunnel, all IPv4 and IPv6 addresses are removed. The tunnel loopback configuration is removed.

Overlay routing is not allowed on the default VRF. A user VRF instance is mandatory when configuring a VE interface if a VLAN is mapped to a VNI.

The no form of the command removes the VRF routing instance assigned to an interface. IP addresses and protocol configuration on this Layer 3 interface are removed.

Examples

The following example assigns a VRF instance to the Ethernet interface 1/1/1. 

device(config)# interface ethernet 1/1/1
device(config-if-e1000-1/1/1)# vrf forwarding guest

The following example configures a forwarding VRF named red on an IPsec tunnel interface identified as 1. 

 device(config)# interface tunnel 1 
 device(config-tnif-1)# tunnel mode ipsec ipv4                             
 device(config-tnif-1)# vrf forwarding red

The following example configures a forwarding VRF overlay.

device(config)# vrf overlay-vrf
device(config-vrf-overlay-vrf)# rd 1:1
device(config-vrf-overlay-vrf)# address-family ipv4 max-route 128
