mac-age-time

Configures the MAC address age timer.
Syntax
mac-age-time seconds
no mac-age-time seconds

The default MAC address age timeout is 300 seconds.

Parameters
seconds
Timeout value in seconds. Valid values range from 60 through 86,400 seconds. A value of 0 disables the MAC address age timer.

Usage Guidelines

To disable the MAC address age timer, set the timeout value to 0.

RUCKUS recommends the following based on the number of MAC addresses in the system:

  • For more than 16,000 MAC addresses, use a timer greater than 60 seconds.
  • For more than 64,000 MAC addresses, use a timer greater than 120 seconds.

Typically, the actual MAC address age time ranges from 1 to 2 times the configured value. For example, if you set the timer to 60 seconds, MAC address entries age out after being unused for 60 to 120 seconds.

However, aging may take longer than expected if all of the following conditions are met:

  • The MAC address age timer is set to more than 630 seconds.
  • There are over 6000 MAC address entries.
  • All MAC address entries are learned from the same packet processor.
  • All MAC address entries are set to age out simultaneously.

The no form of the command resets the MAC address age timeout value to the default of 300 seconds.

Examples

The following example sets the MAC address age timeout to 570 seconds.
