Configures the register message rate limit for Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) and IPv6 Protocol Independent Multicast (PIMv6).

The default register message rate limit is 1 packet per second.

Parameters
rate-limit
Specifies the maximum number of register packets sent or received per second by the router. Valid values range from 1 through 50. The default is 1.

Usage Guidelines

This command can be used on both designated router (DR) and rendezvous point (RP) switches. The rate limit configuration applies to all (S, G) pairs.

The register rate limit works only when a S,G, or *G entry is created in the Multicast Forwarding Information Base (MFIB). In the absence of them, the rate limit fallbacks to a global 1000pps rate. The rate limit cannot be enforced until the entry is created in the MFIB. Entry creation usually takes some finite amount of time on reception of register message, after which the rate limit is enforced.

The no form of the command restores the rate limit to 1.

Examples

The following example sets the register message rate limit to 20 packets per second.

device# configure terminal
device(config)# router pim
device(config-pim-router)# register-rate-limit 20

The following example restores the register message rate limit to the default of 1 packet per second.

device# configure terminal
device(config)# router pim
device(config-pim-router)# no register-rate-limit

The following example sets the register message rate limit to 15 packets per second for PIMv6.

device# configure terminal
device(config)# ipv6 router pim
device(config-ipv6-pim-router)# register-rate-limit 15
