Deployment Recommendations for ZTP

Keep these points in mind when configuring the Campus Fabric domain with the zero-touch or SPX interactive-setup utility:

Please make bullet points look like a dot and not a circle to maintain uniformity

  • Before LAGs are formed, individual links may cause loops, especially if the CB or PE is connected to clients that are running any control protocols.

  • Multiple links between any two units cause loops until they are converted to an SPX LAG. Ruckus recommends using spx-port or spx-lag to avoid loops.

  • Loops cause high traffic in the looped ports and may cause high CPU if the looped packets are trapped to the CPU.

  • The zero-touch utility does not run if the CPU level is greater than 96 percent. Instead, the utility issues a warning that suggests using the SPX interactive-setup utility.

  • The SPX interactive-setup utility can run even under high CPU conditions.

  • Loops should be resolved once the zero-touch or SPX interactive-setup utility has converted multiple links between any two units to SPX LAGs.

  • As a best practice, you should remove the zero-touch-ports configuration once PE discovery is complete. And also disable zero-touch-enable.

  • Once the zero-touch-enable configuration is removed after discovery, if the user wants to make changes to the existing system, such as changing PE IDs or moving PEs, the user can run SPX interactive-setup.

  • Do not connect hosts or access points to PE candidates until zero-touch provisioning is complete.

  • In a live production setup with connected hosts and access points, Ruckus recommends the SPX interactive-setup utility.

  • Zero-touch configuration works for PE candidates that have no configuration.

  • After new units are plugged in the Campus Fabric domain, check for loops by entering the clear statistics and then the show statistics brief commands on the CB. The packet counts displayed should be low. If packet counts are high, then that indicates there are loops in the system. The SPX interactive-setup utility can resolve all loops.

You can use manual configuration instead of ZTP or SPX interactive-setup to have greater control over the discovery process and avoid loops and high CPU. Manual configuration requires the following steps.

  1. Configure the correct SPX ports or SPX LAGs on the CB and on new PE candidates.

  2. Configure and reload new units to convert them to PEs.

  3. Physically connect the links.
