Time Profile

Time Profile is a configuration tool designed to automate the execution of CLI commands on an ICX device based on predefined schedules. By orchestrating command execution, it streamlines network management, improves operational efficiency, and reduces human error.

Feature Overview

The Time Profile feature is designed to optimize the management of network resources by enabling users to schedule the execution of CLI commands on a switch. This functionality supports a range of tasks, from implementing configuration changes and conducting routine maintenance to automating operational procedures. By allowing command execution based on predefined schedules, time profiles offer a flexible and efficient solution for network management.

The Time Profile feature supports the following customizations:

  • Types of Time Profiles: One-time profiles execute just once; these profiles are suitable for single-instance tasks. Recurring profiles, recommended for tasks that need to be repeated, allow for ongoing command execution according to a set schedule (daily, weekly, or monthly recurrence patterns). The flexible scheduling functionalities enable you to create time profiles with specific start and termination dates, for one-time execution or recurring execution, at specific intervals and time.
  • Command List Management: The add command can be implemented for as many commands as your time profile requires, and they will all be executed per the schedule that you configure.
  • Activation and Management: Use the schedule and no schedule commands to activate and deactivate time profiles. For monitoring profile status and configurations, use the show time-profile command. The show time-profile command provides visibility into configured time profiles, enabling users to monitor the status of scheduled command execution and verify settings. This command allows for checking details of all profiles or retrieving information about specific profiles, facilitating effective management and troubleshooting. For information on the Time Profile feature-related CLI commands, refer to the RUCKUS ICX FastIron 10.0.20a Command Reference Guide.

By leveraging the Time Profile feature, network administrators can proactively manage network resources, reduce manual intervention, and improve overall network performance.

Requirements

This feature has no special hardware or software requirements for feature enablement or usage.

Considerations

  • The Time Profile feature relies on the system's clock and calendar settings for applying profiles.
  • You must provide commands in the correct syntax; the system does not validate the command syntax added to the command-list configuration.
  • You must provide commands in the correct execution order, including configuration modes and the sub-commands.
  • If the switch is not in an executable condition, scheduled time-profile executions are likely to be skipped.

Best Practices

  • Schedule Based on Operational Hours: For enterprises looking to save energy and reduce costs, create time profiles to power down connected PoE devices (such as VoIP phones) during non-operational hours, such as weekends or outside business hours.
  • Optimize Resource Utilization: Use time profiles to turn off PoE-powered devices, like lights, during times when they are not needed, such as during daylight hours. This approach helps in conserving power and extends the lifespan of devices.
  • Align with Specific Schedules: For environments like classrooms, configure time profiles to disable access points (APs) based on class schedules. This ensures that resources are available when needed and are conserved during downtime, improving overall network efficiency and security.

Limitations

The execution-time command provides granularity to the hour and minute.
