Automatic Fanless Mode Support for RUCKUS AV 8200 Switch

RUCKUS AV Switches employ intelligent fan management systems to optimize cooling efficiency. During the boot process or after a reload, fans may operate at a higher speed to ensure adequate cooling. Once the system stabilizes, fan speeds are adjusted based on internal temperature sensors. This dynamic approach ensures optimal cooling performance without unnecessary noise.

Overview

The automatic fanless mode is a feature designed to optimize fan usage based on real-time conditions. If the RUCKUS AV 8200 switch can operate reliably without fans, it will automatically enter fanless mode. However, if the system detects that fanless mode is not sufficient to maintain optimal temperatures, the fans will be reactivated.

Requirement

  • The automatic fanless mode is supported only on ICX 8200-24PV.
  • A RUCKUS AV 8200 switch transitions to automatic fanless mode when the following conditions are met:
    • 25G SFPs are not enabled or inserted into ports.
    • The PoE power allocation is less than 150 W.
    • The dynamic power management (inline power allocation dynamic) is not configured.

Automatic Fanless Mode Considerations

  • Even if fanless mode is configured on a switch, fans will be turned on temporarily during bootup or reboot and will be turned off after the bootup to ensure adequate cooling.
  • If fanless mode is configured, the automatic fanless mode feature does not have any effect as configuration take priority.
