Configuring Telnet Remote Access

Remote access using Telnet can be enabled and various access parameters can be configured.
When accessing the device CLI using Telnet the following can be configured.
  • Telnet password
  • Telnet connection rejection messages
  • Telnet idle time
  • Number of failed Telnet logins
  1. Enter global configuration mode.
    device# configure terminal
  2. (Optional) If Telnet is disabled, enable Telnet.
    device(config)# telnet server
To prevent users from accessing the CLI of the device across the network, Telnet can be disabled.
  3. Create a Telnet password.
    device(config)# enable telnet password telpwd
  4. Suppress Telnet connection messages.
    device(config)# telnet server suppress-reject-message
This configuration suppresses any denied Telnet access messages from a device to a Telnet client. The Telnet client is denied access without messages.
  5. Configure the Telnet idle time.
    device(config)# telnet timeout 120
The timeout for an inactive Telnet session is set to 120 minutes. After 120 minutes of inactivity, the session is disconnected.
  6. Configure the Telnet login timeout period.
    device(config)# telnet login-timeout 7
In this example, the Telnet login timeout forces a session to timeout after 7 minutes even if the session is active.
  7. Configure the number of login attempts for Telnet access.
    device(config)# telnet login-retries 5
After 5 failed login attempts, the ICX device disconnects the Telnet session.
