Wi-Fi Calling

Certain mobile service providers offer Wi-Fi Calling, allowing built-in software applications on smartphones to initiate an authentication process between the mobile device and the mobile carrier through the Wi-Fi network.

As a result, an IPsec tunnel is established between the phone and the mobile network using Wi-Fi, through which calls, and SMS messages are routed. Although the end-user device and Mobile Packet Core communicate directly over encrypted tunnels, the controller can identify and prioritize Wi-Fi Calling traffic according to the Wi-Fi Calling profiles you create.

Note: There is no need to enable the Wi-Fi Calling feature in the controller for Wi-Fi Calling to function. End-user devices (smartphones) and mobile service providers communicate directly, and form encrypted tunnels using the regular IP service provided by the Wi-Fi network. The access points or controller do not intermediate this communication. However, the RUCKUS controller can detect and prioritize Wi-Fi Calling traffic to ensure an optimal application experience.
