Multicast Filter

The Multicast Filter feature is designed to drop multicast and broadcast traffic from associated wireless clients, thereby preventing multicast and broadcast storms that can consume wireless bandwidth, AP resources, and generate unnecessary network traffic.

This feature is crucial for maintaining network performance and stability, especially in environments with a high density of wireless clients. When enabled, this feature drops all incoming IPv4 and IPv6 multicast and broadcast traffic from associated wireless clients, except for specific types of traffic that are essential for network operations.

These exceptions, which form the "multicast filter bypass" list, include:

  • ARP requests
  • DHCPv4 requests
  • DHCPv6 requests
  • IPv6 Neighbor Solicitation (NS)
  • IPv6 Neighbor Advertisement (NA)
  • IPv6 Router Solicitation (RS)
  • IGMP
  • MLD
  • All unicast packets

Downstream multicast traffic from the network to wireless clients is unaffected and will be allowed.

Note: This feature is applicable only to associated wireless clients. Wired clients are not impacted, meaning multicast and broadcast traffic from wired clients will still be allowed.

Enable Multicast Filter in the advanced option of the WLAN configuration.

Note: Multicast Filter and Multicast Rate Limiting are mutually exclusive.
