Applying QoS Settings to Application Policies

Applying QoS (Quality of Service) Settings to Application Policies involves defining and enforcing rules that prioritize network traffic based on specific applications or application categories.
To create an application policy, perform the following -
  1. Navigate to Security > Application Control > Application Policy. Click + Create to create a new policy or select an existing policy from the list and click Configure to edit.
This displays the Create Application Policy or Edit Application Policy window as per the selection.
  2. In the Rules section, click + Create.
This displays the Create Application Policy Rule window.

  3. Select the following options to apply QoS settings to application policies.
    • Rule Type - Select QoS from the drop-down menu.
    • Application Type - Select an application to apply the QoS rule, either from the System Defined list or by creating a User Defined application using an IP address and port numbers.
    • Application - Select the application to apply the QoS rule from the drop-down list.
    • Uplink Marking - Assign a priority to the traffic coming from the wireless clients towards the wired network before it leaves the AP.
      1. Choose one of the following fields to mark:
        • 802.1p: Marks the assigned traffic priority at the Layer 2 level of the packet.
        • DSCP: Marks the assigned traffic priority at the Layer 3 level of the packet.
        • Both: Marks both the Layer 2 and Layer 3 fields of the packet.
      2. Assign a priority to the selected field from the following available:
        • Voice: This priority is used for real-time voice communication, such as VoIP calls, which require low latency and high reliability to ensure clear and uninterrupted conversations.
        • Video: This priority is for video streaming and conferencing, which need consistent bandwidth and low jitter to maintain smooth playback and high-quality video.
        • Best Effort: This is the default priority for general data traffic, such as web browsing and email, which can tolerate some delay and variability in delivery.
        • Background: This priority is for non-critical traffic, such as file downloads and backups, which can be delayed without impacting the user experience.
    • Downlink Priority: Assign a priority for traffic from the network to the wireless client before it exits the access point (AP) by selecting an option from the drop-down menu.
  4. Click OK. The Application Policy Rule is saved. Follow the above steps to add multiple rules to the list. Click OK to save the Application Policy.

Apply this policy to one or more WLANs in the Firewall Option within the WLAN configuration. For more details on assigning policies to a WLAN, refer to the Creating a WLAN Configuration.
