Optimized Connectivity Experience
The IEEE 802.11ai protocol, also known as Optimized Connectivity Experience
(OCE), aims to enhance the overall connectivity experience by leveraging systemic
information available within planned and managed networks, such as hotspots,
workplaces, and operator-deployed networks. By exchanging this information, OCE APs
and wireless clients can make intelligent decisions that collectively optimize the
connectivity experience.
This protocol includes features like OCE Capability Indication, Minimum Beacon Transmission Rate, and Probe Response Suppression, which help manage airtime more efficiently and improve network performance. The following mechanisms enable OCE APs and wireless clients to optimize the use of airtime, reduce congestion, and enhance the overall performance and reliability of the network:
- Broadcast Probe Response - Instead of sending multiple unicast probe responses, the AP sends a single broadcast probe response to multiple wireless clients, reducing the number of management frames and freeing up airtime for data transmission.
- Beacon Frame Replacement - If a beacon frame is scheduled to be transmitted within the time indicated in the Probe Request, the AP can use the beacon frame to convey necessary information, eliminating the need for a separate broadcast probe response.
- Probe Suppression - OCE STAs can include attributes in their Probe Requests to suppress responses from specific APs, reducing unnecessary probe responses and further minimizing management traffic.
- RSSI-Based Association Rejection - The AP rejects (Re-)Association Requests from STAs with insufficient RSSI, preventing devices with marginal connectivity from associating with the network. The STA must wait until the Retry Delay expires or until it estimates sufficient RSSI before attempting to reconnect.
Enable OCE in the Advanced Options of the WLAN configuration.
