Configuring DNS Server through User-defined VRF and Management VRF

DNS server resolution is primarily supported only through the default VRF. However, this feature now allows DNS server resolution through user-defined VRF and management VRF. This feature does not support IPv6 DNS servers with VRF; it only supports IPv4 DNS servers with VRF.

Note: This functionality is supported on ICX8200, ICX 7850, ICX7650, and ICX7550 devices only.

Perform the following steps to configure DNS server resolution through user-VRF.

  1. Enter global configuration mode.
    device# configure terminal
  2. In global configuration mode, create a VRF instance and exit.
    device(config)# vrf vrf1
    device(config-vrf-vrf1)# exit
  3. Configure a DNS server with IPv4 address for that VRF.

    device(config)# ip dns vrf vrf1 server-address 8.8.8.8

  4. Configure one or more domain-lists for that VRF.
    device(config)# ip dns vrf vrf1 domain-list www.google.com
    device(config)# ip dns vrf vrf1 domain-list www.yahoo.com

The following example configures DNS resolution through management VRF.

device# configure terminal
device(config)# vrf vrf2
device(config-vrf-vrf2)# exit
device(config)# management vrf vrf2
device(config)# ip dns vrf vrf2 server-address 8.8.8.8
