Increasing the Number of Configurable VLANs or Port-to-VLAN Associations

You can increase the maximum number of VLANs or port-to-VLAN associations that can be configured.

You can specify up to 4095 VLANs, however, you can configure only 4094 VLANs. VLAN ID 4094 is reserved for use by the Single Spanning Tree feature.

VPORTs entries are created in the software database for each port association to a VLAN. By default, this limits port-to-VLAN associations to 8,192 (Max VLANs * MAX ports per VLAN, or 64 * 128).

  1. Enter global configuration mode.
    device# configure terminal
  2. Increase the maximum number of VLANs or port-to-VLAN associations.
    device (config)# system-max vlan 4094
    device(config)# write memory
    device(config)# end
    device# reload

In the example, increasing the maximum number of VLANs to 4094 subsequently increases the available port-to-VLAN associations to more than 524,000 entries (4094 * 128). When entering system-max vlan num command, the num parameter indicates the maximum number of VLANs. The range of valid values depends on the device you are configuring. Refer to Allocating Memory for More VLANs or Associated Ports.

Note: The system-max default VLAN is increased from 64 to 4024. Hence the default VPORT limit is no longer equal to the default MAX VLAN setting.

  3. Increase the maximum number of virtual routing interfaces.
    device(config)# system-max virtual-interface 512
    device(config)# write memory
    device(config)# end
    device# reload

When entering system-max vlan num command, the num parameter indicates the maximum number of VLANs. The range of valid values depends on the device you are configuring. Refer to Allocating Memory for More VLANs or Associated Ports.
