Configuring the SNMPv3 Agent

Configuring the SNMPv3 Agent to communicate with the SNMP manager enables the transmission of SNMP trap notifications for monitoring and alerting of devices on your network.

Ensure that the SNMP manager has access to port 161 for SNMP communication. If the SNMP Trap notification function is enabled, ensure that the SNMP manager can receive SNMP Trap messages on port 162 or a specified port number from RND.

If multiple SNMPv3 Agents will coexist in RND, ensure that the same combination of user, privilege, target IP, and target port is not duplicated.

Complete the following steps to configure SNMPv3 agent settings:
  1. On the menu, select Admin > Alarms.
The Alarms & Settings window is displayed.
  2. In the Alarms & Settings window, select the Settings tab and scroll down to the SNMPv3 Agent Setting panel.

  3. In the SNMPv3 Agent Setting panel, click the toggle button to enable SNMPv3 and globally activate SNMP notifications.
A confirmation dialog box is displayed. Click Yes to proceed. When toggled off, the SNMPv3 Traps are disabled, meaning SNMP notifications are disabled globally and no notification messages will be sent out.
  4. Click the icon. The fields to configure the SNMPv3 agent parameters are added to the table.
  5. Complete the following fields:
    • User: Enter a username to identify the SNMPv3 manager or application.

This adheres to the User-based Security Model (USM), where each user has specific credentials for authentication and authorization. The username is used in combination with other security parameters, such as authentication and encryption.

Note: Do not use duplicate usernames when configuring multiple SNMPv3 settings. If duplicate usernames are configured, only one instance will be applied, and other entries with the same username will be ignored.

    • Authentication: Specify an authentication method to verify the source of the SNMP message and ensure its integrity during transmission. Select one of the authentication methods from the drop-down list:
      • MD5: Uses the Message-Digest Algorithm 5 (MD5) for message authentication.
      • SHA: Uses the Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA) for message authentication, offering stronger security than MD5.
    • Auth Pass Phrase: Enter a password used for authentication.

This password generates a hash (MD5 or SHA) for the message, ensuring that authentication succeeds only if the password matches on both the manager and the device. This prevents unauthorized users from accessing the device.

    • Privacy: Specify the encryption method to secure SNMP messages and ensure confidentiality during transmission. Select one of the methods from the drop-down list:
      • N/A: No encryption is performed.
      • AES: Uses the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm for encryption.
    • Privacy Phrase: Enter a password used for encrypting messages.

This password, combined with the selected encryption algorithm (for example, AES), ensures that data remains confidential during transmission. Decryption succeeds only if the password matches on both the manager and the device.

    • Privilege: Defines the level of access or permission granted to the SNMP manager. Select one of the privileges from the drop-down list:
      • Read-Only: Allows the SNMP manager to retrieve information from RND.
      • Trap: Allows RND to send trap notifications to the SNMP manager.
      • Read/Trap: Provides both read access and the ability to send trap notifications.
    • Target IP: Enter the IP address of the SNMP manager or system where SNMP messages will be sent. This specifies the destination for SNMP traps if the privilege is set to Trap or Read/Trap. If the Privilege is set to Read-Only, the Target IP field is disabled as the SNMP manager is reading data from the RND server, not receiving traps.
    • Target Port: Enter the network port number on the SNMP manager where SNMP messages (requests and traps) are sent and received. This field is used for trap delivery when the privilege is set to Trap or Read/Trap. If the Privilege is set to Read-Only, the Target Port field is disabled since traps are not being sent to the SNMP manager.
  6. Click the icon to save the SNMPv3 agent setting.
Once the SNMP Agent is configured, you can Refresh, Edit, and Delete the configured SNMP agent setting from the SNMPv3 Agent Setting panel.
After configuring the SNMPv3 agent, you must enable SNMP Notification in the Alarm Setting panel to automatically receive SNMP trap notifications for specific events or conditions occurring within RND. For more information, refer to Managing Alarm Events and Notifications.

You can obtain the MIB file by downloading the file from the RUCKUS Technical Support website. After obtaining the MIB, follow the instructions for your network management system (NMS) to be able to use the MIB with your system.
