Handling Stack-Port and Stack-Trunk Mismatches in ICX 8100 and ICX 8200

When a stack-port is incorrectly connected to a stack-trunk, the system monitors and restores port status once the mismatch is resolved—either through configuration changes or physical disconnection.

When configuring stacking on ICX 8100 or ICX 8200 switches, it is important to ensure proper alignment between stack-port and stack-trunk connections. Misconfigurations can lead to error-disabled ports.

Mismatch Behavior

The following describes platform-specific behavior when stack connections are improperly configured.

  • If a stack-port is connected to a stack-trunk, the second port of the stack-trunk becomes error-disabled.

  • This behavior is specific to ICX 8100 and ICX 8200 platforms.

Use the show stack command to view the current stack configuration and clearly identify any ports that are disabled due to mismatches or unsupported connections.

To correct a live mismatched link (stack-port to stack-trunk) identify the affected stack unit and apply the correct configuration depending on the port-to-port connections or trunk-to-trunk connections, using the following commands.

Note: If the mismatched link is physically disconnected, the system also re-enables the error-disabled ports. The system rejects CLI inputs when the specified stack ID exceeds the supported range and displays the valid range for reference.
device# configure terminal
device(config)# stack unit 1
device(config-unit-1)# multi-stack-port ethernet 1/2/1 and ethernet 2/2/1
device(config-unit-1)# multi-stack-trunk ethernet 1/2/3 to 1/2/4 and ethernet 2/2/3 to 2/2/4

Best Practices

  • Verify stack topology before connecting stack cables.

  • Use consistent stack-port or stack-trunk configurations across connected units.

  • Monitor port status during initial setup to identify and resolve mismatches promptly.
