Building a Two-unit Stack with a Linear-topology Trunk Using Stack Interactive-setup

The interactive-setup utility generates the linear-topology trunk option only when all ports of the linear-topology trunk are connected.
The following procedure uses an ICX 8200 stack as an example. The two-unit ICX 8200 stack has one potential linear-topology trunk, (x/2/1 to x/2/4).

Complete the following steps to configure a two-unit linear-topology trunk using stack interactive-setup.

  1. Connect cables between the two units. (In this example, four cables are used as shown in ICX 8200-24P Two-unit Stack with Linear-topology Trunk as Configured in Example.)
  2. On the unit you want to become the active controller, enable stacking.
    ICX8200-24P Router# configure terminal
    ICX8200-24P Router(config)# stack enable
Enable stacking. This unit actively participates in stacking
    ICX8200-24P Router(config)# exit

  3. On the same unit, run the stack interactive-setup utility.
Note: For more information on the stack interactive-setup utility, refer to The stack interactive-setup utility.
    ICX8200-24P Router# stack interactive-setup
You can abort stack interactive-setup at any stage by <ctrl-c>
    0: quit
    1: change stack unit IDs
2: discover and convert new units (no startup-config flash) to members
3: discover and convert existing/new standalone units to members
2&3 can also find new links and auto-trunk or convert chain(s) to ring.

Probing topology to find clean units...
The system detects that all ports of a candidate linear-topology trunk are connected. Then it displays an option for you to choose a ring (y) or a linear-topology trunk (n).
  4. When prompted by the system, enter n to create a linear-topology trunk.

The unit running stack interactive-setup reloads the other unit as a stack member.

A two-unit stack forms when the member boots up and joins the stack.

  5. Enter the write memory command when prompted to save the learned configuration.
    ICX8200-24P Router# write memory

  6. Enter the write memory command again when prompted after the second unit reloads and joins the stack.

The following example creates a two-unit ICX 8200 stack with a linear-topology trunk using stack interactive-setup.

ICX8200-24P Router# configure terminal
ICX8200-24P Router(config)# stack enable
Enable stacking. This unit actively participates in stacking
ICX8200-24P Router(config)# exit
ICX8200-24P Router# show running-config
