Configuring the Stale State Timeout for IPv6 Neighbors

The stale state timeout for IPv6 neighbors on an interface can be configured.
The following task sets the stale state timeout for IPv6 neighbors to 180 seconds on an Ethernet interface. After the specified period of time expires, unused IPv6 neighbors are removed. The configured timeout value is applicable for new neighbors created after the stale state timeout value is altered. The stale state timeout value is not modified for existing neighbors.
  1. Enter global configuration mode.
    device# configure terminal
  2. Enter interface configuration mode.
    device(config)# interface ethernet 1/1/1
  3. Configure the stale state timeout period.
    device(config-if-e10000-1/1/1)# ipv6 nd stale-time 180

The following example sets the stale state timeout period to 180 seconds for an Ethernet interface.

device# configure terminal
device(config)# interface ethernet 1/1/1
device(config-if-e10000-1/1/1)# ipv6 nd stale-time 180

The following example restores the stale state timeout period to the default of 7200 seconds for a VE interface.

device# configure terminal
device(config)# interface ve 217
device(config-vif-217)# no ipv6 nd stale-time 180
