ICX 7150 Stack Configuration Overview

The following table provides an overview of ICX 7150 stacking capabilities.

Note: Beginning with FastIron release 10.0.10j, RUCKUS ICX 7150 switches are no longer supported.

    Note:
  • The maximum number of units in an ICX 7150 stack has been reduced from 12 (in FastIron 8.0.9x release) to 8 (in FastIron 10.0.10f).
  • If you are upgrading from FastIron 8.0.9x to FastIron 10.0.10f on an ICX 7150 stack, we strongly recommend changing the unit IDs to values less than 9 prior to the upgrade. Furthermore, you must modify any stacking configurations that were previously configured with unit IDs greater than 8 to reflect the newly assigned unit IDs.

If your stack currently consists of more than 8 units, you must reconsider upgrading. For stacks with 8 or fewer units, ensure that all unit IDs are less than or equal to 8. If you have units with IDs greater than 8, you must modify these IDs before upgrading to avoid potential issues.

You can use the stack interactive-setup option '1' to modify a member's ID. However, note that this action does not automatically update the configuration. You must manually replace instances of x1/y/z with x2/y/z in the configuration. Here, x1 represents the old stack ID, and x2 represents the new ID.

  • The 7150 stack might become unstable after upgrading to 10.0.10f if any unit within the stack has a Stack ID greater than 8.
  • Behavior of units with stack IDs greater than 8 during upgrade to FastIron 10.0.10f:
    • Bootup: The unit boots as a standalone device. The stack enable command is removed from the startup configuration. The following warning message is displayed:
      #### Warning! This unit's boot-up ID is 9, which is more than the maximum allowed (8).
      #### This unit will be recovered as Standalone.
    • Post-Bootup Configuration: You can manually configure stack enable and rebuild the stack, but only with unit IDs in the range of 1 to 8. Any configuration with a unit ID greater than 8 will be rejected during bootup and will not be applied.
  • Stacking and uplinks are not supported with the 5-meter passive cable on the ICX 7150 device. The 3-meter passive cable does not support cross-connection stacking on ICX 7150 devices (for example, from n/3/1 to n/3/3); however, the cables can be used for same-port connections (for example, n/3/1 to n/3/1).
  • ICX 7150 models with an "ES" suffix identifier do not support stacking.

ICX 7150 Stacking Capabilities

Stacking Capability ICX 7150 Additional Information
Topologies supported Ring and linear Refer to ICX 7150 Stacking Topologies.
Maximum stack size 8 units

Any combination of eligible ICX 7150 devices may be stacked.

From FastIron release 09.0.00 ICX 7150 stacks can contain a maximum of eight units.

Maximum stacking distance 10 Kilometers Refer to FastIron stacking Distances and Optics by Device for more information.
Stacking ports

Four 1-Gbps / 10-Gbps ports on fixed module on front panel that are available for stacking only when configured for 10-Gbps operation

Note: ICX 7150-C10ZP and ICX 7150-C12P devices have two 1-Gbps / 10-Gbps ports that are available for stacking only when configured for 10-Gbps operation.

On most ICX 7150 models, module 3 on the front panel contains four ports that can be used as stacking or uplink ports.

On ICX 7150-C10ZP and ICX 7150-C12P devices, module 3 on the front panel contains two ports that can be used as stacking or uplink ports.

On ICX 7150-48ZP devices, module 2 on the front panel contains four ports that can be used as stacking or uplink ports.

Refer to ICX 7150 Stacking Topologies for module and port locations.
Valid-stack-port sets

On most models, (x/3/1, x/3/3, 2)

On ICX 7150-C10ZP and ICX 7150-C12P devices, (x/3/1, x/3/2, 1)

On ICX 7150-48ZP devices, (x/2/1, x/2/3, 2)

Note: The third number in the set is the maximum number of ports in a stacking trunk. One indicates stack-port only.

Refer to the definition of valid-stack-port set in Stacking Terminology for more information.

Refer to ICX 7150 Stacking Topologies for port locations.

Reconfigurable ports Supported

Use the no stack-port command to reconfigure one stack port as a data uplink port.

Once licensed, stacking ports will come up automatically as 10-Gbps.

You can manually reconfigure 1-Gbps ports to licensed 10-Gbps ports and vice versa using the speed-duplex command. Refer to RUCKUS FastIron Software Licensing Guide for information.

Stack trunks Supported Refer to ICX 7150 Stacking Trunks.

ICX 7150-C10ZP and ICX 7150-C12P devices do not support stacking trunks.

Linear-topology trunks

ICX 7150-C10ZP, ICX 7150-C12P: stack-trunk x/3/1 to x/3/2

ICX 7150-24, ICX 7150-24F, ICX 7150-24P: stack-trunk x/3/1 to x/3/4

ICX 7150-48, ICX 7150-48P, ICX 7150-48PF: no linear-topology trunk

ICX 7150-48ZP: stack-trunk x/2/1 to x/2/4

A linear-topology trunk is allowed only in a two-unit stack. It places the ports from both directions into one trunk.

Refer to Configuring Two-unit Stack Linear-topology Trunks for more information.

Hitless switchover and hitless failover Supported Refer to Hitless Stacking.
License requirements A 10-Gbps license is required to support stacking, except on ICX 7150-48ZP devices.

Two 10-Gbps ports are standard on ICX 7150-48ZP devices, and any additional 10-Gbps ports require a license. On other ICX 7150 models, all 10-Gbps ports require a license.

Licenses are available for additional 10-Gbps ports except on ICX 7150-C12P devices, which have only two available ports. Refer to the RUCKUS FastIron Software Licensing Guide for information.

Configuration options Manual and automatic, including interactive-setup and zero-touch provisioning Refer to Stack Construction Methods.
Access methods TFTP, SCP Software images, boot images, and signatures can be downloaded to a stack using TFTP and SCP. Refer to the RUCKUS FastIron Software Upgrade Guide for more information.
Stacking commands All stacking CLI is available on the ICX 7150 unless otherwise noted on the command reference page.
