Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE)

7.0 feature
The Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) feature is designed to minimize power usage in APs and switches during periods of low data activity or when the network is idle. It follows the IEEE 802.3az standard for energy efficiency. This helps reduce power consumption, heat dissipation, and noise.

Use the EEE feature as a remedy to address PoE budget limitations and reduce power consumption across your access points and switches. But be aware that EEE can introduce latency and jitter, especially in real-time or low-latency applications. In these scenarios, you may want to disable EEE on AP uplinks and switch ports if you run real-time applications (VoIP, video conferencing, gaming) or you observe unexplained jitter or latency spikes.

Using the RUCKUS AP CLI, you can enable or disable the EEE feature on one or both Ethernet ports of an AP.

The EEE feature is disabled by default. To enable EEE on an AP enter the set eee command, specifying the Ethernet port and using the enable or disable option, respectively.

To view the status of EEE on an AP CLI, enter the get eee command.

The following shows examples of executing the set eee and get eee commands for an AP:

By default, the EEE feature is disabled in the RUCKUS ICX switch regardless of the switch model. Using the RUCKUS ICX Switch CLI, you can enable or disable the EEE feature on the switch either at the global configuration level or at the port level. In Global Configuration mode, you can enable or disable EEE on a RUCKUS ICX switch by entering the eee or no eee command, respectively.

Note: EEE support varies across the RUCKUS ICX switch family: EEE is not supported on any ICX 7650 and 7850 devices; EEE is supported on certain models of ICX 7150. Refer to the release-specific RUCKUS FastIron Monitoring Configuration Guide for complete details regarding EEE usage and support per ICX device and model.

To view the EEE status for all ports on the ICX switch when EEE is enabled, use the command show eee-statistics as shown in the following example:

 device# show eee-statistics

This command displays, for each Ethernet port on the ICX switch, the EEE state (enabled or disabled), and describes the EEE activity on the interface as follows:

  • TXEventCount: Number of times the port has entered Low Power Idle (LPI) mode by transmitting an LPI signal.
  • TXDuration: Total time the port has spent in LPI mode since the first transmission.
  • RXEventCount: Number of LPI signals received by the port.
  • RXDuration: Cumulative duration of received LPI activity.
