Multicast Rate Limiting

In deployments where multicast floods occur, the health of the AP should not be impacted. Multicast floods can happen in any direction, and throughput issues have been reported from the field where clients transmitting unicast traffic are affected by other users streaming multicast services.

The Multicast Rate Limit feature is designed to enhance network performance by allowing you to set precise rate limits for multicast traffic in both uplink and downlink directions in terms of absolute numbers (Mbps). This feature focuses on specific types of multicast traffic, including mDNS, IGMP, MLD, and IPv6 multicast, ensuring that only relevant traffic is managed.

Traffic shaping is not included in this feature. Additionally, the downlink multicast rate limit is not supported in 802.11ac Wave-1 APs such as R500, R600, T300, R310, and P300 models.

Note: Multicast Rate Limiting and Multicast Filter are mutually exclusive. Also, when SSID Rate Limiting is configured in the WLAN, it will take precedence over Multicast Rate Limiting.

Enable Multicast Rate Limiting in the advanced options of the WLAN configuration.
