Locating a Device Using Port LEDs

Locating a device in a rack of many interconnected devices can be a difficult task. The LED ON/OFF feature allows you to turn on all the port LEDs to display steady green, irrespective of the port status. When all the port LEDs are turned on to steady green, locating a specific device, a standalone unit, stacked unit, or PE unit, becomes easier.

In a stacking environment, the LED ON/OFF feature can be enabled from the active unit, standby unit, member unit, or PE unit. If the port LEDs are turned on from the active unit, all the port LEDs of the active unit and the standby units are turned on. To identify or locate a specific unit, you must specify the unit ID of the respective unit. After locating the device, you can either turn off all the port LEDs or set the port LEDs to the default status.

The default LED status is the status of the LEDs according to the current status mode, if the status mode is supported. The led default command turns on all port LEDs with the default status. If the status mode is not supported, the link status or port status is considered to be the default LED status. The default LED status behavior also applies after the device is rebooted when all port LEDs are turned on using the led on command.

Note: The LED ON/OFF feature is supported only on the platforms where LED status mode is available. The status mode is supported on the ICX 7150, ICX 7650, ICX 7850, and ICX 7550 devices.

The following example shows how to turn on port LEDs on a standalone unit or stack unit.

device# led on

The following example shows how to turn on port LEDs to locate a unit in a stack from the active unit.

device# led on unit 5

Blink LED

The led blink command sets all the green port LEDs blinking for a given time interval on active, standby, and member units. The port then goes to a state based on the mode button. This option can be used in SmartZone environment to identify any device. The LED state can be altered within the blink interval by external events such as mode button or cable/SFP plugin. The configurable time interval is from 15 seconds to a maximum of 120 seconds. The default time interval is 15 seconds.

Note: The blink LED feature is supported on the ICX 7150, ICX 7650, ICX 7850, and ICX 7550 devices.

You can use the led blink stack all command from an active to set the port LEDs of all units in a stack to blinking for 50 seconds. After the specified time interval, the device goes to the default status.

device# led blink stack all 50

Use the following command to set the port LEDs blinking for a given stack ID and time interval.

device# led blink stack 1 25

led blink stack <stack unit-id> <blink interval in seconds (15-120sec)>

led blink <seconds>

Limitations

The following details must be considered when the blink LED or the LED ON/OFF feature is used:

  • The status mode feature cannot be used when the blink LED or the LED ON/OFF feature is used. . If the status mode is changed, the LED status will be changed to the respective mode.
  • If the status of the port changes due to any events such as linkup or linkdown, plugging in or unplugging a USB, optical interruption, and so on, the LED status of that particular port LED is changed.
