ID Assignment for New Units
All three construction methods previously described use the same ID assignment algorithm. The algorithm considers provisional (not physically existing) configuration and physical connections. If you configure a provisional stack unit, the algorithm first tries to match module types. Next, it tries to assign contiguous IDs based on physical connections.
When there is no provisional stack configuration, unit IDs are assigned as follows.
- If only one new unit is directly linked to the active controller, the new unit receives the unit ID 2 if the ID is available.
- If two new units are directly linked to the active controller, the new unit that is linked to the second stack-port or stack-trunk is assigned the unit ID 2. For example, if the active controller has stack-ports 1/2/1 and 1/2/3, the unit that links to stack-port 1/2/3 is assigned the unit ID 2. The remaining units are given sequential IDs of 3, 4, and so on.
Note: The block diagram that represents stack topology is always in order if possible, starting from the FastIron 08.0.95d release. For a ring topology, the ring diagram is rotated or reversed so the smallest unit ID is in the left-most position. For example, three units are displayed as 1-2-3 rather than 1-3-2 in a ring topology. The diagram for a linear topology is reversed if necessary to make the left-most unit ID smaller than the right-most unit ID. For example, 2-1-3 is preferred over 3-1-2.
