Configuring Breakout Ports and Subports

The breakout functionality is disabled by default and can be enabled. After successful configuration and activation of breakout, the subports are available for configuration.
  1. Enter global configuration mode.
    device# configure terminal
  2. Configure the breakout port.
    device(config)# breakout ethernet 1/2/1
    Breakout operational on: 1/2/1
Note: The RUCKUS ICX 7550-24ZP, ICX 7550-48ZP, ICX 7550-24F, and ICX 7550-48F models require configuring the slot 2 uplink-100g command before configuring breakout.

The RUCKUS ICX 7550-24ZP, ICX 7550-24XZP, ICX7550-24XZP and ICX 7550-24F models require configuring the slot 2 uplink-40g command before applying the breakout on ports 1/2/1 and 1/2/2, and then reloading to take effect. The slot 2 operates in uplink mode with 40-Gbps speed after the reload.

The breakout ethernet command logically divides the ports into subports upon execution.

The breakout ethernet command first checks the existing configuration on the port. If an existing configuration is detected, an error message is displayed indicating that the prior configuration must be removed. To resolve this, remove the existing configuration using the no interface ethernet command, specifying an Ethernet interface. Then, rerun the breakout ethernet command to create the subports.

  3. Configure the subports.
    device (config)# interface ethernet 1/2/1:1 to 1/2/1:4
In the example, port 2/2/4 has been configured for breakout into four subports. Subports are denoted by special four-tuple notation to indicate unit, slot, port, and subport.
Note: Once breakout is removed, the subports and their configuration are also removed.
