User Traffic Profiles

User Traffic Profiles (UTP) are sets of policies applied to wireless clients based on user information returned by an authentication server. These profiles help manage and control network traffic by defining specific rules and actions for different types of traffic.

The UTP consists of the following policies:

  • Rate Limiting: Controls the bandwidth usage for specific types of traffic or applications.
  • Traffic ACL: Includes all capabilities of a Layer 3 ACL, allowing for detailed traffic control.
  • Application Recognition and Control: Provides the ability to deny, apply QoS, or rate limit traffic based on application types.
  • URL Filtering: Restricts access to specific websites.

These policies are applied to wireless clients based on user role assignments. To implement these profiles, you must create the UTP and bind it to a user role within the authentication server.

  • Assignment Flexibility. UTP policies can be assigned at various levels:
    • WLAN Level: Affects all client traffic on the WLAN, with policies applied per user equipment (UE).
    • LAN Port Level: Policies are applied per LAN port, affecting individual ports rather than aggregating across the policy.
    • Client Level: Applied based on AAA response, UE-specific information, or membership in a client list. Policies can be applied per UE or per user, with options for individual or aggregate bandwidth limitations.
  • Policy Application. UTP policies can be applied to:
    • RADIUS 802.1X authentication clients
    • DPSK users at creation or edit
    • Specific WLANs, affecting all connected UE devices
    • Specific guest traffic based on email domains
  • Monitoring and Reporting: UTP policies can be monitored and tracked in the venue, WLAN, and client pages. Policy adherence and detailed information are visible in the client details. UTP policy information is also available in Ruckus Analytics for reporting and analysis.
