Tracking a Static Route against a Watcher Profile

You can track selected static routes against a watcher profile so that if the IP Performance Metrics (IPPM) profile associated with the watcher profile fails due to reachability issues, an alternative route can be enabled. This ensures network stability and failover.

The following task creates an IPPM profile called "p1". It also configures a watcher profile called "w1" and configures the watcher to watch the IPPM profile "p1". It selects static routes to track against a watcher profile so that the device modifies the static route mapped to the watcher profile based on the reachability of the profile "p1".

  1. Enter global configuration mode.
    device# configure terminal
  2. Configure an IPPM test profile.
    device(config)# ippm profile p1 type icmp-echo
This example creates an IPPM test profile named "p1" and places the device in IPPM profile configuration mode.
  3. Configure the target host for the IPPM profile.
    device(config-icmp-echo-p1)# inspect 10.8.8.8
This example configures the target host for the IPPM profile as IP address 10.8.8.8.
  4. (Optional) Configure the minimum and maximum time to live (TTL) values.
    device(config-icmp-echo-p1)# ttl_threshold range 30 to 40
This example configures a TTL range of 30 to 40 milliseconds for the IPPM profile.
  5. (Optional) Configure the maximum allowable jitter for the IPPM profile and configure the probe count.
    device(config-icmp-echo-p1)# jitter threshold 12 probe-count 5
This example configures the maximum allowable jitter for the IPPM profile to 12 milliseconds. A probe count 5 is configured.
  6. (Optional) Configure the minimum and maximum RTT.
    device(config-icmp-echo-p1)# rtt range 20 to 30
This example configures an RTT range of 20 to 30 milliseconds.
  7. Start an IPPM test, specifying the start time, the test duration, and the interval period between tests.
device(config-icmp-echo-p1)# schedule start now duration 3000 frequency 60
This example starts an IPPM test immediately for the IPPM profile with a test duration of 3000 seconds and a test interval of 60 seconds.
  8. Return to global configuration mode.
    device(config-icmp-echo-p1)# exit
  9. Configure a watcher.
    device(config)# watcher name w1
his example creates a watcher called "w1" and places the device in watcher configuration mode.
  10. Specify the IPPM profile to monitor, and the frequency at which the watcher checks for the IPPM test validation results.
    device(config-watcher-w1)# watch ippm p1 frequency 60
This example specifies that the IPPM profile called "p1" is monitored, and that the watcher checks for the IPPM test validation results every 60 seconds.
  11. Configure an action for a watcher configuration upon successful validation.
    device(config-watcher-w1)# action success logging enable
This command enables logging syslog messages upon successful IPPM validation tests.
  12. Configure an action for a watch configuration upon failed validation.
    device(config-watcher-w1)# action failure logging enable
This command enables logging syslog messages upon failed IPPM validation tests.
  13. Return to global configuration mode.
    device(config-watcher-w1)# exit
  14. Select a static route to track against a watcher profile.
    device(config)# ip route 10.5.5.0/24 10.4.4.2 watcher w1
This command configures a static route (10.5.5.0/24) with a next-hop address of 10.4.4.2. It associates this static route with the watcher profile "w1".

The following example creates an IPPM profile called "p1". It also configures a watcher profile called "w1" and configures the watcher to watch the IPPM profile "p1". It selects static routes to track against a watcher profile so that the device modifies the static route mapped to the watcher profile based on the reachability of the profile "p1".

device# configure terminal
device(config)# ippm profile p1 type icmp-echo
device(config-icmp-echo-p1)# inspect 10.8.8.8
device(config-icmp-echo-p1)# ttl_threshold range 30 to 40
device(config-icmp-echo-p1)# jitter threshold 12 probe-count 5
evice(config-icmp-echo-p1)# rtt range 20 to 30
device(config-icmp-echo-p1)# schedule start now duration 3000 frequency 60
device(config-icmp-echo-p1)# exit
device(config)# watcher name w1
device(config-watcher-w1)# watch ippm p1 frequency 60
device(config-watcher-w1)# action success logging enable
device(config-watcher-w1)# action failure logging enable
device(config-watcher-w1)# exit
device(config)# ip route 10.5.5.0/24 10.4.4.2 watcher w1
