DHCPv6 Server
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol version 6 (DHCPv6) is a network protocol for configuring IPv6 hosts with IP addresses, IP prefixes, and other configuration data required to operate in an IPv6 network. All FastIron devices can be configured to function as DHCPv6 servers.
A DHCPv6 server is the IPv6 equivalent of the DHCP for IPv4 server that is documented in the DHCP Server chapter. In the same manner as DHCP for IPv4, a DHCPv6 server allocates temporary or permanent network IPv6 addresses to clients. When a client requests the use of an address for a time interval, the DHCPv6 server guarantees not to reallocate that address within the requested time, and tries to return the same network address each time the client makes a request. When the client is done with the address, the address is released back to the server. Clients may also receive a permanent assignment. In short, the DHCPv6 server assigns IPv6 addresses to all clients and it keeps track of the bindings. A DHCPv6 server also allows for greater control of address distribution within a subnet.
