Using the Switch Troubleshooting Tools

Switch troubleshooting tools include Remote Ping, Remote Trace Route, Client Connectivity, Cable Test, Blink LED, and Download Switch Log.

Access the switch troubleshooting tools in the following way:

Note: When SmartZone is configured in 'IPv6 only' mode, it removes support for Remote Ping and Remote Trace Route.

  1. Select Network > Wired > Switches.
  2. Select a switch from the list, scroll to the Details section, and click the Troubleshooting tab.
  3. In the Troubleshooting tab, choose the required tool as described in the following sections.

Remote Ping

Send five ICMP echo-request packets to either an IP address or a domain name address using a determined packet size and time to live (TTL) value.
  1. In the Remote Ping section, click to display the Remote Ping fields.
  2. Complete the following fields:
    • Target: Enter the IP address or domain name address of the destination (target) you are checking. If entering a domain name address, ensure the switch has a DNS configured.
    • Packet Size: Enter the packet size from 0 through 10000. The switch will only be able to use packet sizes larger than the default MTU when jumbo mode is configured on it, otherwise, the operation will fail.
    • TTL: Optionally enter the Time to Live from 1 through 255. Leave it empty to use the default TTL (64).
  3. Click Ping.
The display window shows the result of the operation.

Remote Trace Route

Track the path that data packets take from the switch to another device across a network, typically the internet.
  1. In the Remote Trace Route tab, click to display the Remote Trace Route fields.
  2. Complete the following fields:
    • Target: Enter the IP address or domain name address of the destination (target) you are checking.
    • Max TTL: Enter the Maximum Time to Live from 1 through 255.
  3. Click Trace Route.
The display window shows the result of the operation.

Client Connectivity

Use a client MAC address to locate the switch where the client is connected, either when directly connected to the switch or through an AP.
  1. In the Client Connectivity tab, click to display the Client Connectivity fields.
  2. Enter the client MAC address.
  3. Click Start. The client location is shown.

Cable Test

Test the physical condition of Ethernet cables connected to their ports. This feature helps detect issues like opens, shorts, and cable length, aiding in quick troubleshooting of connectivity problems.
  1. Select the Cable Test section and click to view the Cable Test fields.
  2. Select a port from the Port list.
  3. Click Cable Test to begin the test. This test may take up to two minutes.
Note: Cable test is only supported on ports that are in auto-negotiation mode. This test might result in the adjacent ports flapping, causing network disruption as a result. You will be prompted to confirm whether you want to proceed with the test.

Blink LED

Making the switch LEDs blink for a determined amount of time helps you locate and identify a switch within a wiring closet. Either within a switch stack or for a standalone switch, this is a good troubleshooting tool when you are uncertain of the physical location of a switch.
  1. In the Blink LED tab, click to display the Blink LED fields.
Note: The Blink LED can be applied to either a single switch, or to every switch in the stack by selecting the All option, or to a particular unit-id selected from the list.
    • In the Seconds field, enter the time in seconds and click Blink to enable blinking of port LEDs on switches.
Note: The value in seconds ranges from 15 through 120. By default, it is 15.
