Changing the AP IP Address

You can configure an access point (AP) to use either a static IP address or obtain one dynamically via DHCP. This section explains how to change the AP IP address using the controller web UI or the AP CLI.
Attention: If you assign an IP address in a different subnet, you must also update VLAN tagging on the access switch port serving the AP. Failing to do so may disconnect the AP from the network.
Note: After changing the AP IP address:
  • The AP will show as offline in the SmartZone controller. During this period, configuration updates, firmware upgrades, and management actions cannot be performed on the AP until it successfully reconnects to the controller with its new IP address.
  • The AP continues servicing connected clients, but features requiring constant controller communication—such as policy enforcement, client roaming coordination, and real-time monitoring—may be unavailable or delayed.
  • If the AP Reboot Timeout setting is enabled at the Zone, the AP will automatically reboot if it cannot contact the controller or its gateway within the specified timeout interval. For more information about this setting refer to the RUCKUS SmartZone Access Points and Switch Management Guide.

Changing the AP IP Address from the Controller UI

Follow these steps to change the AP IP address using the controller web UI:

  1. Select Network > Wireless > Access Points.
  2. Select the AP for which you want to change the IP address.
  3. Click Configure to open the Edit AP: window.
  4. In the General Options section, locate the Network Settings and select one of the following:
    • Static: Select this option and enter the IP address information (IP Address, Network Mask, and Gateway); optionally, enter the Primary DNS and Secondary DNS information.
    • Dynamic: Select this option for the AP to obtain the IP address via DHCP.
    • Keep the AP's settings: Retain the current configuration present on the AP and subsequent changes performed from the AP CLI.
  5. If you are moving the AP to a different subnet, update the VLAN tagging on the access switch port before applying changes.
If you are configuring the AP in a different subnet, the AP will be disconnected from the network after the changes are synchronized and will remain disconnected until you configure the access switch port with the new VLAN tagging.
  6. Click OK to save the configuration and close the Edit AP: window.

Changing the AP IP Address from the AP CLI

Complete the following steps to change the AP IP address using the AP CLI:

  1. Connect to the CLI of the AP through SSH.
  2. Enter the command get ipaddr wan to verify the current IP address.
  3. Change the IP address using one of the following methods:
    • To configure a static IP address, enter the command set ipaddr wan ip_address subnet_mask gateway.
      rkscli: set ipaddr wan 192.168.200.13 255.255.255.0 192.168.200.253
      OK

    • To configure a DHCP IP address, enter the command set ipaddr wan dynamic.
      rkscli: set ipaddr wan dynamic
      OK
      udhcpc (v1.15.2) started
dhcp deconfig event for interface br0
Attention: Changing the AP’s IP address will terminate your current SSH session. To reconnect, use the new IP address.
The AP will operate with the new IP address configuration. If you changed subnets, ensure the switch port VLAN matches the new AP settings to restore connectivity.
