Troubleshooting Using Custom Events

Switch custom events help you troubleshoot specific switch issues. The controller provides several default custom events regarding CPU and Memory usage. For these, you can modify only the threshold value. You can also create a custom event for a failure scenario matching specific criteria that you define. Criteria include specific text in a system-defined Switch event, the number of times the matching Switch event occurs during a specified time period, and the severity level of the Switch event.

To create and manage switch custom events, do the following:

  1. From the controller GUI main menu, select Monitor > Events & Alarms > Events > Switch Custom Events to display the Switch Custom Events page.

  2. Click Create to display the Create Switch Custom Event dialog box.

  3. Complete the following fields:
    • Event Name: Enter the name to identify this custom event.
    • Event Description: Enter a brief description.
    • Event Type: By default, TextPattern is selected and is the only one available.
    • Event Contains The Text: Enter the text contained in the switch event that needs to be monitored.
    • Threshold: The Threshold defines the number of times a specific event must occur before it triggers an action or alert. Enter a value between 0 through 255.
    • Time Window: The Time Window defines the duration during which the system evaluates the number of event occurrences and compares them against the configured threshold.
Note: Beginning with the SmartZone 7.2.0 release, the Time Window allows you to select 90 seconds, 3 minutes, or 5 minutes from the drop-down list.
    • Event Severity: Select Major, Critical, or Warning status from the list.
  4. Click OK.
Note: It is quite common that entry level switches use up to 70-80% of the available memory. You can modify the thresholds for memory usage custom events to a higher limit in such cases.
