AP Cannot Update Configuration Changes

Normally, after pushing a configuration change to an AP, the AP Configuration Status will transition from New Configuration, to Updating..., and Up-to-date. This topic describes the methods for collecting diagnostic data when an AP fails to apply configuration changes pushed from a SmartZone controller. The collected data enables RUCKUS Support to identify the root cause and recommend corrective actions.

Data collection for troubleshooting configuration update issues should be initiated under the following circumstances:

  • An AP remains in a Configuration Update Failed state.
  • Configuration changes (for example, SSID, VLAN, radio settings) do not take effect.
  • The AP reboots repeatedly after a configuration push.
  • RUCKUS Support requests configuration-related diagnostics.

Before collecting data:

  • Confirm that the AP is online and reachable from the controller.
  • Verify that the AP is assigned to the correct Zone.
  • Ensure that the controller has sufficient resources and licenses.
  • Confirm that the configuration changes are valid and supported by the AP model.

Data Collection Checklist outlines the essential data types you need to collect when troubleshooting an AP configuration update issue. This information helps RUCKUS Support identify the root cause and determine the necessary corrective actions.

Data Types Collection Method Notes
AP Configuration Status Select Network > Wireless > Access Points, select the AP and check the column Configuration Status. Alternatively, select the AP and scroll to the Details section, click the General tab and in Status Summary sub-section check the Configuration Status information. The APs in a healthy state may take up to a couple of minutes to transition from New Configuration to Up-to-date status. During a configuration sync issue, the status may remain in one of the intermediate transition states or result in a Configuration Failed state.
Event Logs Select Monitor > Events & Alarms > Events and search for events related to the AP MAC address, AP name, or IP address. Additional events regarding the AP in question may correlate to the configuration sync issue and will help you pinpoint the root cause of the problem.
Application Logs Select Monitor > Troubleshooting & Diagnostics > Application Logs, select the Control Plane and click Download Snapshot Logs. Download the Snapshot Logs for each of the nodes in the cluster. Snapshot Logs contain a variety of information that assists the RUCKUS support team in identifying symptoms and potential causes of AP configuration sync issues. These may include problems originating from the AP itself, the controller system, or the communication link between them.
Support Logs Select Network > Wireless > Access Points, select the AP and click More > Download Support Log. Support Logs contain not only event data but also additional contextual information about the AP, enabling the RUCKUS Support team to more effectively analyze and investigate the issue.
