Scenario 2 - Using Zero-touch Provisioning to Configure a Stack

All stack member candidates must be correctly connected.

Note: The zero-touch provisioning process requires clean devices, with the exception of the active controller. Clean devices do not contain any configuration information.
Note: An ICX 7650 device with startup-config flash using 40-Gbps stacking ports but no other configuration is treated as a clean unit. Because an ICX 7650 device that uses 40-Gbps stacking requires the rear-module stack-40g command followed by the write memory and reload commands to change the default 100-Gbps stacking ports to 40-Gbps stacking ports, the related startup-config flash must be present.

If you are adding clean units without a startup or run-time configuration to a stack, you may elect to use the stack zero-touch provisioning process. Follow these steps to construct a stack with zero-touch provisioning.

  1. Power on all candidate devices.
  2. Log into the device that you want to be the active controller.
  3. If necessary, on each candidate, enter the erase startup-config command in Privileged-EXEC mode, and reset the device to convert it to a clean unit.
    ICX7850-FS Router# erase startup-config
    ICX7850-FS Router# reload-yes
    Rebooting...

  4. (Optional) Enter the show running-config command to check the current configuration of the standalone from which you plan to construct the stack. The configuration must include stack enable.
    ICX7850-48FS Router# show running-config
    Current configuration:
    !
    ver 09.0.00
    !
    stack unit 1
      module 1 icx7850-48fs-port-management-module
      module 2 icx7800-100g-8port-800g-module
      stack-port ethernet 1/2/1
      stack-port ethernet 1/2/5
    !
    !
    end

  5. If stacking is not enabled, configure stack enable on the unit that will serve as active controller.
    ICX7850-48FS Router# configure terminal
    ICX7850-48FS Router(config)# stack enable
Enable stacking. This unit actively participates in stacking
    ICX7850-48FS Router(config)# exit

    ICX7850-48FS Router# show stack

         +---+
Current stack management MAC is d4c1.9e18.83e1
    ICX7850-48FS Router#

  6. On the active controller, in global configuration mode, configure stack zero-touch-enable.
    ICX7850-48FS Router# configure terminal
    ICX7850-48FS Router(config)# stack zero-touch-enable
    ICX7850-48FS Router(config)# end
    ICX7850-48FS Router#

  7. Wait a few minutes, and the active controller should discover the new units and reload them as stack members.
Note: When enabled, stack zero-touch provisioning is automatically triggered every three minutes.
The stack forms after the members join.
  8. (Optional) Enter the show stack zero-touch status command to check the status of stack zero-touch provisioning.

The following example shows that zero-touch provisioning has converted three new units to stack members.

ICX7850-48FS Router# show stack zero status

  9. (Optional) Enter the show stack command to verify the units in the entire stack.
    ICX7850-48FS Router# show stack

  10. (Optional) Enter the show running-config command for additional information on the stack, including active software version, the module configuration of each stack unit, and their stacking connections.
    ICX7850-48FS Router# show running-config

  11. When stack construction is complete, remove the stack zero-touch-enable configuration.
Note: Although leaving stack zero-touch provisioning enabled is harmless, the process is triggered every three minutes in background, which wastes system resources if there are no more units to discover.
    ICX7850-48FS Router# configure terminal
    ICX7850-48FS Router(config)# no stack zero-touch-enable

  12. Enter the write memory command to save the stack configuration.
    ICX7850-48FS Router(config)# write memory
