PoE Power Management Methods

The following PoE power management (PM) methods are applicable for the , , and devices:

  • Static PM
  • Dynamic PM
  • Hybrid PM

Static PM

In static PM, power gets reserved to every powered device (PD) connected on switch ports. New PDs will not get powered if the power reservation is not possible, even if total consumption is less than the total power budget. The PDs will not lose power as long as unit power budget is not changed. Power budget can get changed when power supply units are removed or added, budget can also get changed with fanless mode configuration.

Dynamic PM

In dynamic PM, power is not reserved for any ports. PDs are powered up automatically until the total power consumption is within the ICX device's total power budget. If the power consumption is increased, either by increasing the power consumption of connected PDs or by adding new PDs, the ICX devices keeps the total power consumption within the total power budget by immediately shutting down any PDs with low priority ports, or, if all ports have the same priority, shutting down PDs attached to higher-numbered ports.

Note: The Dynamic PM enabled ports can still operate as Static PM ports, if those ports are configured as priority 1.

Hybrid PM

In hybrid PM, some PDs will have power reservation and other PDs will not have power reservation.

To enable the hybrid PM behavior, you must configure dynamic PM for the unit and then configure inline power ethernet unit/slot/port priority 1 for the ports that require Static PM and inline power ethernet unit/slot/port priority 2 or inline power ethernet unit/slot/port priority 3 for the ports that require Dynamic PM.

Note: In this mode, all LLDP PoE power requests are granted since there is no power reservation. As a result, PD can be shut down due to lack of power even though it believes that power has been granted.
