Enabling the DHCPv6 Client

The following task configures the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol for IPv6 (DHCPv6) client device.
Note: The steps for enabling the DHCPv6 client device are the same for both stateful and stateless address configuration. For the peer router, specific parameters can be set on the interface to determine stateful or stateless address auto-configuration. For more information, refer to Configuring a Peer Device for DHCPv6 Address Auto-configuration.
For the Ethernet Interface:
  1. Enter global configuration mode.
    device# configure terminal
  2. Enter interface configuration mode.
    device(config)# interface ethernet 1/1/10
  3. Enable IPv6 for the interface.
    device(config-if-e1000-1/1/10)# ipv6 enable
  4. Enable the automatic configuration of an IPv6 address using stateless or stateful automatic configuration for the Ethernet interface.
    device(config-if-e1000-1/1/10)# ipv6 address autoconfig
  5. For the VE interface:
  6. Enter global configuration mode.
    device# configure terminal
  7. Configure a VE interface
    device(config)# interface ve 1
  8. Enable IPv6 for the interface.
    device(config-ve-1)# ipv6 enable
  9. Enable the automatic configuration of an IPv6 address using stateless or stateful automatic configuration for the VE interface.
    device(config-ve-1)# ipv6 address autoconfig

This following example The following task configures the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol for IPv6 (DHCPv6) client device.

For the Ethernet interface:
device# configure terminal
device(config)# interface ethernet 1/1/10
device(config-if-e1000-1/1/10)# ipv6 enable
device(config-if-e1000-1/1/10)# ipv6 address autoconfig

For the VE interface:
device# configure terminal
device(config)# interface ve 1
device(config-ve-1)# ipv6 enable
device(config-ve-1)# ipv6 address autoconfig
